The Great Pinewood Derby!
As a collaboration between Wassaic Projects education and residency programs, I was invited to do a take over of the Art Nest for a month to host the Great Pinewood Derby!
On July 26th from 12-5 PM was Race Day, where folks sent their tiny creations down the track in a joyful showdown of style and spirit. I built the race track for all of your derby cars and facilitated three workshops helping folks create the car of their dreams!
The goal was to invite anyone and everyone to participate in the fun and thrill of a pinewood derby, an event historically reserved for young boys in the Boy Scouts. Instead of the historical focus on speed, the emphasis was on creativity, experimentation, and making joyful, curious creations out of 2x3s!
The most beloved moments were the crashes, the googly eyes, and the wonderfully silly designs created by participants ranging in age from 3 to their 80s.
